How much does it cost?

If you are enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at MSU, the particular tuition rate and fees for that program would apply. Tuition increases are posted one to two months prior to the commencement of each semester. For your reference, the tuition rate for fall semester 2005 through the Lifelong Education Program was a total of (US) $988.50 per course ($329.50/per credit hour x 3 credits). Off-campus Lifelong Education Students are exempt from matriculation fees, international student fees, and international health insurance.

Further information regarding tuition and fees is available from the Controller’s Office here:

Note: Payment by credit card is accepted for Master Card, American Express or Discover for a small fee. However, VISA is not accepted.

How many hours will this course involve?

Plan on an average of nine hours per week. Of course, you can spend more time if you desire. There are many url links to outside sources that you are free to investigate.

What types of assignments are given?

Most assignments are written papers, which students will submit via the internet (see answer to Question 7 below). These papers typically range in length from one paragraph to one-to-two pages. Other assignments may involve longer papers.

Do I have to be online to read the modules and do the assignments?

Yes and no. Some modules include short lectures delivered by streaming video, which you will need to access while you are online (see hardware requirements in Question 15). However, all written documents for the course are available for students to download onto their computer and print/read at their convenience. The course documents are provided in either Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, or Adobe PDF format. If you don’t have a copy of Microsoft PowerPoint on your machine, you can download a free copy of the Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 Viewer here.

If you don’t have a copy of the Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can download a free copy here

No, you do not need to purchase any books or special software. You will be assigned an MSU email address and an ANGEL course message account for use in corresponding with the instructors and course manager. (See also answer to Question 15 below for computer requirements.)

How do I turn in assignments?

You will be uploading your assignment directly to a folder located on the course website at https://angel.msu.edu.For details about the file upload procedure, see the Angel Student Guide at http://help.angel.msu.edu/students/index.php?page=students_guide.

Assignments may also be typed in the body of a course email. Most students prefer to type the assignment in a Word or WordPerfect document. You may also fax or mail your assignment.

What is the grading system?

A numerical system is used for the final grade, with 4.0 being the highest. Lifelong Education Students Policy applies to all students in this enrollment classification. For further information, see http://www.reg.msu.edu/ROInfo/EnrReg/LifelongEducation.asp.

The Coordinator of Lifelong Education Student Affairs will monitor students’ academic progress each semester to ensure that once nine or more credits have been attempted, a cumulative grade-point average of 2.00 for Undergraduate Lifelong Education students, or 3.00 for Graduate Lifelong Education Students, has been achieved. Failure to maintain the appropriate GPA standard may result in removal from Lifelong Education status. Note: This applies to all students whether they are taking a few unrelated courses or are interested in a college-level certificate program.

When are assignments due?

Assignments are generally due weekly, following the completion of each course module. Certain modules may last more than a week or additional time may be given in the module for an assignment. For further information, consult the course syllabus.

What if I am traveling or unable to turn in an assignment on time?

Since some students are working food industry professionals, we realize that with workloads, traveling for business, vacations, and commitments at home there will be occasions that students will not have assignments turned in on time. You need only contact the Course Facilitator who will grant the extension and notify the instructor. All assignments must be turned in two weeks after the final module is completed at the very latest.

What if I am unable to complete a course?

An incomplete will automatically be given to students who fail to turn in all assignments. The student must then have all assignments turned in and graded prior to the middle of the next semester enrolled within one year, or if not enrolling in another course, all assignments must be turned in and graded within one year at the latest.

How often is the course scheduled?

At the present time, the course is scheduled only once each year, in the Fall Semester. If you would be interested in arranging a course during the Spring or Summer semesters, please contact the course facilitator, John Stone: jvtone@msu.edu

Do you allow students to visit/audit the courses? If so, what is the tuition rate?

(Visitor status means you are not required to do the weekly assignments – for those who are interested in the course information only but not the credits or certificate. You must contact the Office of the Registrar prior to the 5 th day of the course and have the visitor code added to your record.)

If you are interested in visiting/auditing the course only you must sign up as a visitor at the time of enrollment or within the first five days of the course. You must contact the Office of the Registrar and have the visitor code added to your record. The tuition rate is the same. However, you will not be required to do the assignments, you will not receive any academic credits, and you will not receive an Incomplete on your record. For further information about visitor status, see the Registrar’s Office: http://www.reg.msu.edu/read/UCC/Updated/geninfogenpro.pdf.

What are the computer requirements for taking an internet course?

This web-based course is available to anyone with an Internet connection. Because some lecture material is delivered by streaming video, a high-speed internet connection (128kbps or higher) is strongly recommended. However, the lectures will also be made available in a more compact, audio-only, format  that will be accessible via standard 56kbps modems.

In addition, the course requires access to a computer with a minimum of the following common set of tools for the duration of the course.

  • A web browser such as Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer.
  • RealPlayer 8.0 or newer (including RealOne Player) in order to run multimedia. If you don't have RealOne Player installed on your computer, you can download a free version by going to the Real Networks web site at: http://www.real.com/.

Virus Prevention, Detection and Repair: As with all computing situations involving the Internet or other file sharing, MSU recommends that you practice safe computing—install and use a virus detection and repair software package, and back up your work regularly.

What are the language requirements for these courses?

At the present time, the courses are only offered in the English language. The instructors understand, of course, that many students use English only as a second language . As long as you feel comfortable communicating in English, you may take the course. We will certainly try to assist students if something is not clear.
